IFHCHosts Workshops to Raise Awareness of Houbara Conservation Among Falconers

  • Workshops will run twice daily as part of Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (ADIHEX).

  • Abu Dhabi, 10 September 2015:The International Fund for Houbara Conservation (IFHC) will be hosting presentations for the UAE’s falconer community during its participation at the Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (ADIHEX). Designed to raise awareness of it activities to conserve the vulnerable Houbara bustard species among its key stakeholder community, the presentations will address key issues such as upholding traditional falconry practices and respecting protected areas, in a bid to ensure protection of the species.

Running twice daily at 2pm and 7pm, the presentation will feature information on the Houbara bustard such as variations among the species and distribution ranges, to the ecological work undertaken by the Fund, which serve to inform a successful captive and release programme.

Speaking on the falconers workshops, Mohammed Al Baidani, Director General of the IFHC said, “Falconers are a key target audience for the IFHC, since without Houbara there can be no falconry. We are committed as part of our cultural heritage to see this ancient practice endure, but we also require the support of the falconry community to help ensure a sustainable population of Houbara. These presentations are designed to communicate with the falconers how we can work together, for the benefit of us all.”

One of the key messages the IFHC is keen to communicate with the falconer community is the importance of its tracking and monitoring devices, which provide key ecological data that help to inform its breeding and release programme. The devices are regularly fitted to released captive bred Houbara which provides the IFHC with data which helps them to determine prime locations for release for optimum survival rates and migration and breeding habits. Devices can sometimes be come across by falconers who hunt Houbara, and the IFHC is keen to encourage the community to return these devices should they ever be found.

“We are keen to be perceived by the falconry community as partners working to a common goal. We hope to open the lines of communication with them through activities such as our workshops at ADIHEX and establish a relationship of trust by doing so.”
