CHAMPIONING HOUBARA CONSERVATION AMONG FALCONERS WITH TECHNOLOGY

The International Fund for Houbara Conservation mounts its most technologically advanced educational stand targeting falconers during the fourth International Festival of Falconry in Abu Dhabi.

 

Abu Dhabi, 7. December 2017: The International Fund for Houbara Conservation (IFHC) participates at the fourth International Festival of Falconry (IFF) - the world’s largest gathering offalconers from around the world - this weekend in Abu Dhabi.

Partaking at Khalifa Park on 8-9 December, IFHC will display its holistic conservation programme by high-technology means, to educate the global falconry community on the importance of sustaining the Houbara bustard in the wild through conservation programmes and regulated hunting practices.

“Falconers’ support are integral to our conservation efforts, so it’s important for us to be present at this festival which gathers more than 700 falconers from more than 90 countries. With our most technologically advanced stand to date, we aim to share with them our conservation efforts in a highly engaging manner. We also seek toimpress uponthe falconry community the importance of regulated hunting practices for sustaining Houbara populations in the wild, and hope that they will share this knowledge withtheir fellow falconers in their home countries,” commentsAli Al Shamsi, Acting Head of Education & Communication at the International Fund for Houbara Conservation.

The Houbara Fund is leveraginghigh-technology edutainment devices at its stand, featuring touch-screens and virtual reality devices which enable guests to virtually visit its centres, and learn about the IFHC’s efforts over the past four decades.

Falconers and the general public visiting the Houbara Fund’s stand during the festival will have the chance to see 10 of the elusive Houbaras live and up-close, while learning about the IFHC’s captive breeding and release efforts. Children can interact with the mascots Haboor&Haboora, and have their faces painted like Houbaras at the stand’s fun kids’ corner, which also features Houbara themed iPad games and cartoons.

About The International Fund for Houbara Conservation (IFHC)

The International Fund for Houbara Conservation (IFHC) was established in 2006 and reorganised by Royal Decree no. 7, 2014 issued by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE President and Ruler of Abu Dhabi.

The Fund aims to increase wild Houbara populations through its captive breeding and release programme, with on-going monitoring to ensure long-term preservation and genetic variation of the species. The IFHC also aims to foster ties with international and regional, governmental and non-governmental bodies to encourage sustainable practices to ensure the conservation of Houbara.

The International Fund for Houbara Conservation oversees the management of an international network of specialized Houbara breeding centers aiming to maintain and increase the birds’ numbers in their natural habitats in range areas. These are:

  • National Avian Research Centre (NARC) – Sweihan, Abu Dhabi, UAE
  • Emirates Centre for Wildlife Propagation (ECWP), Kingdom of Morocco
  • Sheikh Khalifa Houbara Breeding Centre (SKHBC-KZ), Republic of Kazakhstan
  • Sheikh Khalifa Houbara Breeding Centre (SKHBC-AD), Abu Dhabi, UAE
